Freezing Temperatures

Attention Tulane Community,

The greater New Orleans area, including the Northshore, is forecast to experience freezing and below-freezing temperatures tonight, Monday, January 15th, and tomorrow night, Tuesday, January 16th. Tulane University will be operating as normal tomorrow. Employees should contact and work with their supervisors if they are unable to get to work, feel unsafe doing so, or if childcare issues are present.

Please exercise caution when driving in case of ice on bridges and roads.

Sign up for emergency alerts from the city of New Orleans by texting NolaReady to 77295. To receive Jefferson Parish emergency alerts, text the phrase JPALERT to 888777. 1. Please take the following steps to prepare your residence:

  • Wrap your house’s water pipes to prevent freezing.
  • Run a spaghetti-thin trickle of water from one faucet furthest from your home’s main water valve – this will also help prevent freezing.
  • If you rent, talk to your landlord about them checking and wrapping any exposed pipes.

2. If you are going to use a space heater, do so safely!

  • Place it on a solid, flat surface.
  • Keep it at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn (papers, furniture, curtains, rugs, etc.)
  • Plug it directly into a wall outlet, not an extension cord or power strip.
  • Turn it off when leaving the room or going to bed.
  • Do NOT use your stove or oven to try to heat your house.

Charge your electronic devices in case of a power outage.

Have enough bottled water and non-perishable food to last several days in case of a power outage or a boil water advisory.

Bring your pets indoors.

Cover your plants.

Stay safe and warm,
